GREAT GABLES

PHILIP BIDWELL ARCHITECTURE

great_gables

  • Set in a quiet lane, this magnificent two storey home was designed to make the best use of the sloping section & to enjoy the expansive views covering the Canterbury Plains to the Southern Alps.
  • The house constructed of concrete filled Superform Building Blocks & clad in Rockcote plaster has five bedrooms & three bathrooms and has no less than three sets of exterior stairs.
  • Entrance columns invite you through the wide cedar gate along a drive court to the front porch. Inside, a spacious entry with glazed roof & walls leads on to the open spaces of the living areas and a formal lounge. Indoor outdoor flow is provided to all possible areas with the balcony areas and expansive landscaping.
  • The initial brief given to Philip Bidwell of Philip Bidwell Architectural Design was for a Plantation style home with strong classic elements which has been well achieved.  The extensive detailing includes large recessed ceiling areas, wrought iron balustrades with timber capping, dado rails, large moulded architraves & skirtings.
  • Difficulties with the project included gaining access to the sloping site & more than 50 contractors needing to be involved within the project.  An access road had to be built before the excavation work could begin.
